Globe, PLDT-Smart say telecom services disrupted due to Ulysses

The country’s telecommunications giants on Thursday advised the public that its services are disrupted by Typhoon Ulysses, particularly in areas without electricity.

“Due to strong winds of Typhoon Ulysses, there were multiple fiber cuts reported in selected areas in NLZ, SLZ, and one in NCR [National Capital Region]. Despite these, the Globe network remains stable with no major damages incurred,” Globe Telecom Inc. said in an advisory.

The Ayala-led telco said that in NCR, some areas are experiencing “intermittent to no signal due to prolonged loss of commercial power.”

“Clean energy fuel cells and generators deployed are powering up our cellsites given the current power challenges,” Globe said.

It said the provinces of Camarines Sur in South Luzon and Pampanga in North Luzon have been heavily affected with service disruptions.

“We will continue to provide service updates to our customers, while repairs for areas flooded will resume as soon as access and safety is secured,” Globe said.

For its part, PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit Smart said that “areas with commercial power failure have made it difficult for our subscribers to use their mobile data.”

“Our teams are monitoring the situation and will work to restore services as soon as it is safe to do so,” said PLDT-Smart First Vice President and Group Head of Corporate Communications Cathy Yang.

“Our network personnel, resources, and equipment have been prepositioned to work on sites affected by Typhoon Ulysses,” Yang said.

As of 12 noon, some 1.94 million customers of Manila Electric Company are still without electricity as the power distributor gradually restores power as the weather begins to improve.

The Pangilinan-led telco said that its PLDT and Smart Stores will be temporarily closed in the following areas:

  • NCR (all stores)
  • Central Luzon (all stores)
  • North Luzon (Nueva Vizcaya and Pangasinan)
  • South Luzon (all stores except those in Bicol)

PLDT-Smart said it is ready to provide Libreng Tawag, Libreng Charging and Libreng Wifi services “where the public needs it most, once it is safe to do so.” -MDM, GMA News
