Ulysses death toll rises to 73 -NDRRMC


The number of deaths due to the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses has increased to 73, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday.

In its latest situation report, the NDRRMC said the fatalities include 24 from Region II, six from Region III, 17 from CALABARZON, eight from Region V, 10 from CAR, and eight from National Capital Region.

A total of 24 individuals were wounded while 19 others are still missing.

The agency said a total of 3,052,049 individuals or 727,738 families from Regions I, II, III, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, V, NCR and CAR have been affected. Of that number, 70,784 families or 283,656 people are being assisted in various evacuation centers.

Ulysses also brought damage to agriculture which already amounted to P2,715,299,906, according to the NDRRMC.

On the other hand, damage to infrastructure already rose to P5,256,272,751.28. A total of 39,808 houses have been damaged, the NDRRMC added.

The NDRRMC already recommended placing the entire Luzon under state of calamity due to the effects of Ulysses as well as other strong storms, including Quinta and Rolly.

President Rodrigo Duterte has no decision yet on the recommendation, however, his spokesman, Harry Roque, is confident that the former will follow the NDRRMC's suggestion.

Duterte earlier moved for the creation of the Build Back Better Task Force to speed up the rehabilitation of typhoon-ravaged areas.—AOL, GMA News
