Sinas orders resumption of BMI monitoring to combat obesity among cops

The Philippine National Police (PNP) will resume its monitoring of cops’ body mass index (BMI) in a bid to combat obesity and possible comorbidities, PNP chief Police General Debold Sinas said Monday.

Sinas said he has ordered the PNP Directorate for Human Resource and Doctrine Development to revive the program, which he said was suspended prior to his appointment as police chief due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Obesity causes diabetes, heart disease which are comorbidities for COVID-19… Puwedeng mataba, huwag lang masyado kasi alam niyo, for the last nine months because of the pandemic, parang konti na lang nag-e-exercise at gumagalaw,” he said.

Sinas added that he has been following a diet and exercise regimen himself.

“Ako nga nag-o-observe for the last three months, I strictly followed my diet regimen and exercise. Kung kinaya ko at the age of 55, I don't think so yung mga young ones natin ay hindi na kakayanin,” he said.

Earlier this year, over 30 policemen failed the fitness and BMI tests in Camp Crame. — RSJ, GMA News
