Roque disavows crowded Cebu event; claims LGU organized activity

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Saturday washed his hands off an event in which he delivered a speech before a crowd of people that did not practice physical distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, Roque said he too was surprised by the huge crowd that came to Cebu on Friday, November 27 to attend the opening of the Bantayan Island Airport.

“The activity where I was seen speaking before a crowd was organized by the local government, which I had no control as a guest,” Roque said.

“I was later informed, that the local official/s mentioned in interview/s that they did not expect the huge turnout of people as well,” he added.

Roque also claimed that he urged the crowd to wear their masks.

“As a precautionary measure, I observed physical distancing and reminded those who were present to observe the minimum health standards. Also, I did not shake hands and I wore a face mask,” he said.

He also said that the local government advised the public to wear face masks, adding that there was “general compliance, as seen in the pictures that came out.”

“As the economy gradually reopens, let us continue to take good care of our health so we can work for our families and help the country. Tayo ay mag-ingat buhay para sa hanapbuhay,” Roque said.

As of Saturday, the Philippines had 427,797 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 388,062 recoveries and 8,333 fatalities.  — DVM, GMA News
