The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) urged traditional public utility jeepney (TPUJ) drivers to avail of its service contracting program, as only 1,135 have registered at the Quezon City Memorial Circle Basketball Covered Court as of 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 29 - what was supposed to be the last day of registration.

In an advisory on Sunday, the LTFRB said it would accept some 3,000 applicants until 5 p.m., as part of the provisions of the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.

Those qualified are required to bring an original and photocopy of their professional driver's license, a signed certification of authorization for the unit, two copies of a valid ID of the operator, and a photocopy of the OR/CR of the jeepney.

For those who will not be able to avail on Sunday, the LTFRB said they can proceed to its central office along East Avenue in Quezon City from Mondays to Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They may preregister at https://tinyurl.com/ServiceContracting.

"Ang Service Contracting Program ay may layuning masigurado na may maasahan at ligtas na pampublikong transportasyon para sa mga commuters," it said.

Under the program, drivers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic will receive P6,500 which they may use to pay for debts, fuel, and other operational and maintenance expenses or to purchase safety equipment, supplies, and facilities. — DVM, GMA News
