Despite foul weather, groups mark Int'l Human Rights Day with rally

Despite the foul weather, various militant groups gathered in Manila on Thursday to mark International Human Rights Day with a protest rally.

Taking centerstage was an effigy of President Rodrigo Duterte, who has been criticized both locally and internationally for his violent war on drugs that has claimed the lives of thousands of suspects since 2016.

The rallyists were calling for the junking of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, the controversial law that critics say could be used by the government to clamp down on dissent.

The rallyists were also calling for the abolition of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF ELCAC), which has earned controversy for linking several progressive groups and personalities, including the Makabayan bloc at the House of Representatives, to communist rebels.

The groups will march to Mendiola for a program. --KBK, GMA News
