President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday praised soldiers for their efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Speaking at the 85th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Duterte said the “entire nation witnessed how the AFP fought proudly at the frontlines alongside our valiant health workers.”

“Your crucial role in the crafting of the National Action Plan Against COVID-19 was complemented by the deployment of military personnel at various quarantine and swabbing facilities and local communities to help curb the spread of the virus,” the President told the military via video conference.

Duterte also lauded the soldiers for their response to several typhoons and other natural calamities that hit the country this year, “risking your lives in the process.”

“On behalf of a grateful nation, I express my most profound gratitude to you for your willingness to serve at the frontlines as our nation faced these natural disasters, calamities, and a global pandemic,” he said.

“Your involvement in these efforts enabled the government to remain on top of the situation and maintain order.”

Duterte’s critics have accused the government of relying on former military officials and bureaucrats instead of public health experts to fight the pandemic.

Among the government officials tasked to implement the country’s COVID-19 response were retired military generals: Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Presidential Peace Adviser  Carlito Galvez Jr., and Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu.

Malacañang, however, said these former military officials “get things done” and were not “embroiled in bureaucratic rigmaroles.”

Ahead of Monday’s celebration, the AFP showcased its naval and air assets which according to Lorenzana was to show the Filipino people "where their taxes go."

In his speech, Duterte reiterated his “unyielding commitment” to the full implementation of the AFP Modernization Program.

“We will continue to enhance your skills through capacity building initiatives and the procurement of modern equipment that will enable you to fulfill your mandate with the highest degree of expertise and professionalism,” he said.

The President then asked the soldiers to remain committed to their sworn duty to protect the Constitution, uphold national sovereignty, and “look forward to healing and genuine progress.” — BM, GMA News
