Pia Cayetano: Exempt bikers, joggers from mandatory use of face shields

Bikers and joggers should be exempted from the mandatory use of face shields as this could lead to road accidents, Senator Pia Cayetano, herself a cyclist, said Wednesday.

"As a cyclist on the road, I know how important it is to be fully aware of your surroundings. A shield could drastically impair one’s vision and perception of space, which may lead to accidents," she said in a statement.

"Recognizing the role of exercise in promoting mental and physical health, I also ask the IATF to exempt joggers from the requirement when jogging in open spaces, provided they observe social distancing measures," she added.

to wear face masks and face shields whenever they go out of their residence.

Face shields are previously required only inside establishments and public transportation vehicles.

Last Saturday, the Pasig City government issued an advisory exempting bikers from mandatory wearing of face shield while in the city.

A consolidated advisory on the proper use of face shields, including exemptions, would be released by various government agencies, according to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF). --Dona Magsino/KBK, GMA News
