NCR cities with highest COVID-19 daily attack rate in last 2 weeks

As the Philippines marks the start of the holiday surge in cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), experts from the OCTA Research group identified the Metro Manila cities with the highest daily attack rates in the last two weeks.

According to Joseph Morong’s “24 Oras” report on Wednesday, Dr. Ranjit Rye said a higher daily attack rate indicates an ongoing outbreak of COVID-19.

“They show if an outbreak is happening in a particular place,” he said. “It means that the outbreak is alive and kicking as far as that place is concerned. And there’s a very good chance of getting infected if you’re not very careful.”

In their latest monitoring report, the OCTA team defined the daily attack rate as “the number of new cases per day relative to population.”

The following cities in the capital region registered high daily attack rates from December 6 to 19:

  • Makati - 7%
  • Pateros - 5.8%
  • San Juan - 5.6%
  • Pasay - 5%
  • Pasig - 4.5%
  • Mandaluyong - 4.5%
  • Marikina - 3.%
  • Quezon City - 3%
  • Malabon - 2.7%
  • Manila - 2.4%

Across the country, the highest daily attack rates were logged in:

  • Mankayan, Benguet - 59%
  • Santiago, Isabela - 14.4%
  • Baguio City - 8.4%
  • La Trinidad, Benguet - 7.1%
  • Makati - 7%

The experts earlier said a fresh surge of infections due to the holiday season had started in Metro Manila.

"This is the worst time to have a surge eh. We're hoping it's a slow, moderate surge, meaning up to 2,000 cases,” Rye said.

“We're seeing signs that it might be worse than the July, August surge that we had. And July, August, we had to close down. We don't want to close down anymore,” he added.
