Philippines’ COVID-19 cases exceed 507,000 with 1,783 new infections

The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines climbed to 507,717 on Thursday after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 1,783 new infections as four laboratories failed to submit data on time.

This marks the third consecutive day where less than 2,000 cases were reported.

According to the DOH, Quezon City reported the highest number of new cases with 99, followed by Rizal with 83, Manila with 78, Bulacan with 69, and Cavite with 66.

The DOH also announced that 500 more patients have recovered from the illness, bringing the total to 467,475, while the nation’s death toll rose to 10,116 with 74 new fatalities.

Five duplicate cases were also removed from the total count while 15 cases that were previously tagged as recovered were reclassified as deaths.

There are also 30,126 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, of which 84.8% are mild, 8% are asymptomatic, 2.5% are severe, and 4.4% are in critical condition.

Based on data from the DOH, 58% of the country’s intensive care unit beds are available while 79% of the mechanical ventilators are ready for use.

The DOH has recommended a repeat of passengers' COVID-19 tests five days after they arrived in the country after some close contacts of the Filipino, who arrived from the United Arab Emirates and tested positive for the UK coronavirus variant, initially tested negative and later turned out to be positive too.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization said nobody should panic about getting access to a COVID-19 vaccine because everyone who wants it will get one.—AOL, GMA News
