1,581 new COVID-19 cases push Philippines’ tally to over 514,000

The Philippines’ coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caseload hit 514,996 on Monday after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,581 new infections as four laboratories failed to submit data on time.

Quezon City recorded the highest daily increase with 89 new cases, followed by Cebu City with 88, Cavite with 80, Davao City with 78, and Cebu province with 50.

Total recoveries also rose to 475,422 after 13 more patients recovered from the respiratory illness, while the death toll climbed to 10,292 with 50 new fatalities.

There are also 29,282 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine.

The DOH said 14 duplicates were removed from the total tally of infections.

“In addition, 190 cases were found to have tested negative and have been removed from the total case count. Of these, 189 were recoveries,” it added.

The DOH earlier reported that 38 close contacts of cases who have the UK coronavirus variant also tested positive for COVID-19.

Five barangays in Bontoc, Mountain Province are under lockdown and strict quarantine after 12 cases of the more transmissible UK variant were detected in the town.

In Metro Manila, mayors are set to discuss quarantine restrictions for February on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Red Cross has rolled out a saliva-based COVID-19 test, which it described as an easier, faster, and cheaper alternative to swab testing. —LDF, GMA News
