De Lima spends night in hospital for medical checkup

Detained Senator Leila de Lima underwent routinary medical examinations with the blessing of a court hearing her drug-related case.

According to a press release from her office, De Lima left the Manila Doctors Hospital at around 10:50 a.m. on Friday after the completion of her exams that began Thursday.

De Lima, who entered the hospital clad in a purple PPE, face shield and face mask, underwent several routinary tests, including X-ray and CT scan, according to her office.

She was immediately escorted back to the Philippine National Police Custodial Center inside Camp Crame in Quezon City.

The detained senator was granted a one-day medical furlough after her legal counsel stressed the need for her to undergo a medical checkup due to her age.

De Lima has been detained since February 2017 due to drug-related charges, which her camp has repeatedly branded as “trumped-up.”

De Lima, a staunch critic of the Duterte administration, is accused of benefiting financially from the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prisons during her time as secretary of the Department of Justice.

She will mark her fourth year in detention on February 24. —Julia Mari Ornedo/KBK, GMA News
