DepEd exec gives 80% rating for distance learning implementation

An official of the Department of Education on Sunday gave an "8 mark" on the scale of 10 for the implementation of distance learning in the country in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interviewed on Dobol B sa News TV, DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado San Antonio cited the professionalism of teachers in his rating.

Earlier, San Antonio said students managed to achieve the expected performance in distance learning during the first quarter of the academic year.

However, the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) earlier called on the government, business, academe, and civil society to help address the “learning crisis” in the country.

“There's no sugarcoating this, because we need to take a long hard look at ourselves before we can move forward, that the Philippine education sector is in crisis,” PBEd chairperson Ramon Del Rosario Jr. said.

“This learning crisis threatens the growth trajectory of our nation,” he added.

Even before the pandemic, PBEd noted that the learning crisis is already happening in the education sector, pointing out that the condition now is possibly worsening. —LBG, GMA News
