Vaccine donation to Philippines is for ‘friend in need,’ says Chinese envoy

Ahead of the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccines donated by China, its ambassador said it was a tradition between his country and the Philippines to help each other in times of need.

“A friend in need is a friend indeed. The donation of vaccines is another testament to the solidarity as well as profound friendship and partnership between our two peoples and two countries,” Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian said in a Facebook post.

“Our friendship and partnership amid this pandemic will continue to grow and prosper as we fight against the pandemic hand in hand,” he said.

The Ambassador announced that the 600,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines by Chinese manufacturer Sinovac will arrive in Manila on Sunday.

“Both teams have been working round the clock to make it happen,” Huang said.

“I want to thank all those who have worked so hard in order to make this happen! I hope the vaccines will help kick off [the] Philippines’ mass inoculation campaign to curb the pandemic and allow Filipinos’ life to return to normal at the earliest,” he added.

Malacañang said that President Rodrigo Duterte will personally welcome the arrival of the vaccines.
