Solon urges increased media role in allaying fears vs. COVID-19 vaccines


An official of the House Committee on Public Information on Friday asked more members of the media to allay the public's fears against of getting vaccinated against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In a statement, Quezon City Representative Alfred Vargas said that a wide-spread public information campaign would be a crucial step in easing the public’s doubt on vaccination and will provide them with the correct information.

“I hope many more will follow and unite to improve vaccine confidence eroded by the Dengvaxia hysteria,” Vargas said.

“I call on the members of the KBP and print organizations to join hands with the government in a united effort to convince our people and promote vaccine confidence,” he added.

Results of a survey conducted by the OCTA Research Group showed that the majority of adult Filipinos do not want to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The lawmaker also said the National Telecommunications Commission may increase the public service airtime given to the government during emergencies and calamities in the amount of 10 percent of paid commercials and advertisement it airs.

Vargas also called on the Inter-Agency Task Force, the Department of Health, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and its private sector partners to mobilize social workers to urge communities to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“Our social workers and also our teachers are the most credible members of the communities apart from the mayor, people listen to them,” Vargas said.

“If we can harness their expertise to help, we should do so. Our efforts must be united,” he added. -Joahna Lei Casilao/NB, GMA News
