Gabriela files manifestation of intent to join in 2022 polls

Gabriela Women's Party lodged a manifestation of intent to participate in the 2022 May elections before the Commission on Elections on Monday.

Gabriela part-ylist Representative Arlene Brosas filed the manifestation coinciding with the observance of the International Women's Day.

She stressed that this is an act of defiance following a disqualification plea filed by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) against the group.

"We are actively campaigning against the NTF-ELCAC's disqualification case, particularly its claim that we are 'advocating violence, as we are well aware that it would set the pretext for wholesale proscription of members of Gabriela Women's Party nationwide under the Anti-Terror Law," Brosas said in the statement.

"But we will never back down. We will never be fazed by the Duterte regime's evil ploy to shun women representation out of the Lower House and disenfranchise millions of marginalized Filipino women," she added.

The government's anti-insurgency task force has been linking progressive organizations, including Gabriela, to communist groups. These progressive groups have denied the accusations.

Meanwhile, Brosas further promised to step up their advocacy on women's rights.

— RSJ, GMA News
