Gordon pushes for creation of police courts

Senator Richard Gordon on Thursday pushed for the creation of a special court where cases of abuse of authority involving police personnel can be tried.

Gordon has filed Senate Bill 1828, or the proposed "Police Courts Act of 2020," which mandates the Supreme Court to create a special court designated as the Police Law Enforcement Court within Regional Trial Courts.

The said courts will handle all civil and criminal cases involving allegations of abuse of authority of the police whether on or off duty.

According to Gordon, the creation of police courts will allow for the speedy disposition of justice.

"The objective of this bill is to really make sure that we do away with many of bureaucracies," he said during the hearing of the Senate justice panel, which he chairs.

"Ito ay garantiya ng gobyerno na magkakaroon ng efficiency and high-quality decisions and resolution of cases. Ito ay makakahinga nang maluwag ang mga tao na kapag ang pulis ang kalaban, may laban na sila," he added.

The creation of police courts will allow the public, including the victims of police abuse, to easily identify the court where their cases are being tried.

"Lahat ng kaso ng pulis ay mapupunta sa isang husgado sa probinsya na doon madaling hanapin at doon madaling mabilang," he said.

"Sa lahat ng oras magkakaroon ng transparency at upang sa ganun ay malalaman natin kung napaparusahan talaga ang pulis o dine-dribble-dribble lang," he added.

Gordon said Congress should take action into the numerous unsolved cases in the country and ensure that justice is brought in these incidents.

"We will not take it any longer and the Congress of this country, while we cooperate with the executive, we will not cooperate with injustice," he said.

"You are not exempt from the long arm of the law, you are not exempt from facing charges just because you are wearing a uniform and a badge," he added.—AOL, GMA News
