The Philippine National Police (PNP) tallied nearly 1,900 unsolved cases of heinous crimes last year, a police official told a Senate inquiry on the spate of killings in the country on Thursday.

Police Brigadier General Albert Ignatius Ferro, director of the PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, said the 1,877 cases include murder, rape, kidnapping, serious illegal detention, violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act and qualified piracy, among others.

“These are the cold cases that are available on hand,” Ferro said during the hearing of the Senate justice committee.

Panel chairman Senator Richard Gordon asked the PNP to submit a copy of the report so that his office can study it.

“I am not going to pass judgment that these are the only cases. I know there are a lot of cases. But we’d like to get that [data],” Gordon said. --KBK, GMA News
