3,749 new COVID-19 infections push total active cases to 47,769

The Philippines on Thursday set another record-high number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases reported in a single day this year with 3,749 new infections, bringing the total to 607,048, as four laboratories failed to submit data on time.

The previous highest recorded daily case count was 3,439 new cases on March 6.

The fresh infections brought a spike to the active cases in the country at 47,769, also the highest this year.

Among these, 91.6 percent are mild, 4.4 percent are asymptomatic, 1.6 percent are severe, and 1.6 percent are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, 406 more patients have recovered from the illness, bringing the total to 546,671, while the death toll climbed to 12,608 with 63 new fatalities.

The DOH said nine duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

Twenty-four cases that were previously tagged as recovered were also reclassified as deaths after the final validation.

Data from the DOH also showed that 55 percent of the country’s intensive care unit beds are available while 74 percent of the mechanical ventilators are ready for use.

Meanwhile, the Philippines is expected to receive 30 million doses of the India-manufactured coronavirus vaccine from American firm Novavax in the late second quarter or early third quarter of the year.—LDF, GMA News
