Devotees flock to churches on Palm Sunday

Devotees flocked to churches to have their palm leaves blessed on Palm Sunday, with at least one church having to deal with social distancing issues amid heightened health protocols.

According to Mai Bermudez's report on 24 Oras Weekend, social distancing was forgotten at one point as a large number of devotees visited Baclaran Church for the purpose.

The church's rector, Father Victorino Cueto, asked police officials for permission to bless the crowd's fronds so that they could go home. He and other priests were given five minutes to do so.

As a reminder to parishioners, Victorino stressed that online masses are available and people should opt to participate in those for the meantime.

Quiapo Church, meanwhile, also ensured that safety protocols are followed by getting everyone’s body temperature and giving alcohol.

They also prohibit attending mass personally and encourage livestreaming instead.

Churches will be closed starting Monday until April 4 in areas placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). — Franchesca Viernes/BM, GMA News
