9,296 new COVID-19 infections push Philippines’ active cases to 124,680


The Philippines on Tuesday reported 9,296 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, bringing the total to 741,181, even as nine laboratories failed to submit data on time.

This marks the fifth straight day where more than 9,000 new cases were reported.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), this pushed the number of active cases in the country to 124,680, the highest recorded this year.

Of this, 96% are mild, 2.3% are asymptomatic, 0.7% are severe, and 0.6% are in critical condition.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 603,310 with 103 new ones while five new fatalities brought the death toll to 13,191.

Nine duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

Meanwhile, one case that was previously tagged as recovered was reclassified as a fatality.

Data from the DOH showed that 76 percent of the country’s intensive care unit beds are available while 57 percent of the mechanical ventilators are ready for use.

The Philippines on Monday reported an all-time high of 10,016 new infections.

Earlier, the DOH recommended a one-week extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) reimposed over Metro Manila and neighboring areas.

Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite and Laguna were put under the most stringent lockdown classification amid a fresh spike in infections.—LDF, GMA News
