8,920 new infections push PHL active COVID-19 cases to almost 139k

The Philippines on Thursday registered 8,920 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total tally to 756,199, as seven laboratories failed to submit data on time.

The Department of Health said the new cases brought the number of active cases in the country to 138,948, this year’s highest.

Of this, 95.9% are mild, 2.5% are asymptomatic, 0.6 are critical, and 0.6% are in severe condition.

Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries also climbed to 603,948 after 205 more patients defeated the viral disease.

The death toll rose to 13,303 with six new fatalities.

The DOH said that nine duplicates had removed from the total case count.

Data from the DOH also showed that 58% of the country’s intensive care unit beds and 41% of the mechanical ventilators are utilized.

Earlier, Dr. Jaime Almora, the president of the Philippine Hospital Association, said hospitals had been already "overwhelmed and overrun" mainly due to their depleted and overworked manpower.

The severity of the situation prompted Almora to say that the country has already "lost" amid the war against the coronavirus.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the country was not losing its battle against COVID-19.

Further, the OCTA Research group said the reproduction number of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila may drop from 1.86 to 1.55 during the March 30 to April 5 period.

Metro Manila and adjacent provinces were placed under enhanced community quarantine until April 4.

Prior to the implementation of the ECQ, the capital region’s reproduction number was at 2.05. --NB, GMA News
