JBC opens application for SC justice post after Gesmundo’s promotion to CJ

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court (SC) following the promotion of Alexander Gesmundo to chief justice.

Applications and documentary requirements would be accepted until May 10, according to the JBC.

Among the requirements to be submitted are birth and law school records, certificates of employment and admission to the Bar, clearances from the Ombudsman, National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police, medical exam results, and the Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.

After the submission of applications, the JBC will determine the final list of applicants who will undergo a public interview.

The multi-sectoral body will then come up with a shortlist of at least three nominees which will be submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte, who makes the final appointment.

Duterte has 90 days from the vacancy or until July to appoint a new SC justice.

Gesmundo assumed the highest post in the judiciary on Monday after President Rodrigo Duterte chose him to succeed retired chief justice Diosdado Peralta.
