PNP death toll due to COVID-19 now 46

The number of fatalities due to COVID-19 among police personnel has reached 46 after two more infected cops died due to the disease, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday.

According to the PNP, the new fatalities were a police lieutenant designated at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Group, and a police lieutenant colonel assigned in the Legal Service. Both died on Monday.

PNP chief Police General Debold Sinas said the police lieutenant, assigned in Camp Crame, tested positive on March 12 and was confined at a private hospital in Pasig City. He died of severe pneumonia.

Meanwhile, Sinas said the police lieutenant colonel tested positive for COVID-19 on April 1. He is asymptomatic but immuno-compromised with high comorbidity.

Citing his wife, the PNP said the police officer was undergoing dialysis three times a week and was due for kidney transplant at the National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI).

Due to his condition and the lack of vacancy at the Kiangan Quarantine Facility in Camp Crame, he was advised to undergo home quarantine under the supervision of the concerned local government unit.

On April 10, the PNP said he was scheduled for dialysis but no hospital admitted him due to his infection.

"In behalf of the PNP, we would like to give our condolences to the bereaved family and assures to give every assistance they needed," Sinas said in a statement on Monday.

"The PNP leadership is doing everything to mitigate this virus especially on our personnel, as frontliners, one death is one too many," he added.

As of Monday, the PNP said the total number of COVID-19 cases among its personnel is 17,637 after 235 new infections were recorded.

At least 2,391 are still active cases, the PNP said. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA News
