Gov't to use stadiums, coliseums as mega vaccination sites —Galvez

Adopting the United States’ strategy, the Philippine government is planning to use stadiums and coliseums as “mega” vaccination sites to reach the targeted four million inoculated Filipinos per month.

“Ang balak namin is gayahin ‘yung ginawa sa US, ‘yung mga stadium at coliseum ay iko-convert natin na mega vaccination sites,” vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said in an interview on ANC.

(What we plan to do is adopt what US has done which is convert the stadiums and coliseums as mega vaccination sites.)

He explained three types of vaccination facilities, the first one being the mega vaccination site, which he said can accommodate up to 10,000 persons a day.

So far, the government is having the second type, which is the medium-sized vaccination site. This can accommodate 5,000 to 6,000 persons daily.

The third type is the mobile and rural vaccination site, which aims to vaccinate people in far-flung areas.

As of April 11, over 1.1 million individuals have been vaccinated in the Philippines, which officially started its vaccination program against COVID-19 on March 1.

To help in the fast-tracking the vaccination program, Galvez said the government needs 55,000 vaccinators in 5,000 to 6,000 sites nationwide.

The Philippines reported 11,378 new COVID-19 cases on Monday afternoon, raising the total COVID-19 tally to 876,225. —KBK, GMA News
