DTI: SIM card registry can avert fake booking via delivery apps

The Department of Trade and Industry is pushing for the adoption of SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card registration mechanism to combat the increasing incidents of fake booking through delivery apps.

“Ang isang panukala natin (one of our proposals) is the registration of cellphone cards or SIM para may traceability sa mga nanloloko" (to trace fraudsters), Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said during state-run PTV’s Laging Handa briefing.

A bill seeking to require end users of prepaid SIM cards to present a valid ID and photo and to sign a control-numbered registration form issued by the service provider of the purchased SIM card is pending in the Senate.

The House of Representatives has passed its version of the bill on third and final reading in May 2018.

Recently, a family in Quezon City was victimized by fake delivery bookings amounting to P15,000 worth of food, forcing them and their neighbors to pay for items none of them had ordered.

Vlogger Rosmar Tan also became a victim of fake delivery booking and was forced to pay almost P15,000 worth of items she did not order.

Lopez said the DTI is encouraging the public to use online payment channels as another tool against fake bookings. —LBG, GMA News
