7,255 new COVID-19 cases bring Philippines’ tally to 1,062,225


The Philippines’ COVID-19 tally rose to 1,062,225 on Monday after the Department of Health announced 7,255 new infections as 15 laboratories failed to submit data on time.

The DOH said the new cases brought the number of active cases in the country to 69,466.

Of this, 94.7% are mild, 1.8% are asymptomatic, 1.1 are critical and 1.4% are in severe condition.

Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries also climbed to 975,234 after 9,214 more patients defeated the respiratory illness.

The death toll increased to 17,525 with 94 new fatalities.

The DOH noted that 13 duplicates were removed from the total case count, while 51 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

Data from the DOH also showed that 65% of the country’s intensive care unit beds and 42% of the mechanical ventilators are utilized.

Earlier in the day, the DOH said COVID-19 infections in the country have been decreasing "slowly" in recent weeks following two months of steep rise in cases.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the national two-week case growth rate fell to -15% from 11% three to four weeks ago.

The average daily attack rate (ADAR) in Metro Manila also dropped to 25 cases per 100,000 population from April 18 to May 1, lower than the ADAR of 34 infections per 100,000 people from April 4 to 17.—LDF, GMA News
