7,443 new COVID-19 cases push Philippines’ total to 1,216,582 with 156 new deaths

The Philippines’ tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases rose to 1,216,582 on Saturday after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 7,443 new infections as two laboratories failed to submit data on time.

This marks the second consecutive day where more than 7,000 cases were recorded.

According to the DOH, active cases in the country decreased to 53,614.

Of this, 93.1% are mild, 2.3% are asymptomatic, 1.8% are severe, and 1.4% are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, 7,533 more patients have recovered, bringing the total to 1,142,246, while 156 new fatalities brought the death toll to 20,722.

Fifteen duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 91 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the Health Department said.

Data also showed that 59% of the country’s intensive care unit beds are in use while 38% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), 58% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 39% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.

The DOH earlier said that modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) is not one of the options for those currently under general community quarantine (GCQ) for the month of June.

NCR and the nearby provinces Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, and Laguna — dubbed as the NCR Plus — were placed under GCQ "with heightened restrictions" from May 15 until May 31, 2021. -MDM, GMA News
