NGCP puts Luzon grid on yellow alert

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Monday afternoon  lifted the red alert on the Luzon grid and has now placed it on yellow alert for the next few hours.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the red alert was lifted as of 4:07 p.m. on Monday. It was first declared at 1 p.m.

The grid operator noted, however, that the Luzon grid will now be placed under yellow alert from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.

A yellow alert indicates that the grid has thin reserves, based on supply and demand, while a red alert indicates that there are zero ancillary services or that a generation deficiency exists.

The latest data available showed that the available capacity stood at 11,419 megawatts, while the peak demand was estimated at 10,439 megawatts.

The NGCP is a privately-owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country's state-owned power grid.

The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) holds a 40% stake in NGCP, while Henry Sy Jr.’s Monte Oro Grid Resources Corp. and Robert Coyiuto Jr.’s Calaca High Power Corp. each hold 30%.

The NGCP consortium holds a 25-year concession contract and a 50-year franchise to operate the country’s power transmission network. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA News
