5,177 new COVID-19 cases reported; death toll exceeds 21K

The Philippines on Tuesday reported 5,177 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, bringing the total tally to 1,235,467, as 10 laboratories failed to submit data on time.

This marks the seventh consecutive day where more than 5,000 cases were recorded.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the number of active cases slightly decreased to 53,203.

Of this, 93.1% are mild, 2.3% are asymptomatic, 1.8% are severe, and 1.4% are in critical condition.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 1,161,252 after 6,230 more patients recovered from the illness.

Meanwhile, 46 new fatalities brought the death toll to 21,012.

Eleven duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 15 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Data also showed that 59% of the country’s intensive care unit beds are in use while 39% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region, 53% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 37% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.

Meanwhile, the Philippines is set to receive the additional 2.2 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine from the COVAX facility on June 11.

As of May 30, the Philippines has fully vaccinated more than 1.2 million individuals against COVID-19.—LDF, GMA News
