5,257 new COVID-19 cases push Philippines' active tally to 52,132

The Philippines’ tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases rose to 1,240,716 on Wednesday with 5,257 new infections as three laboratories failed to submit data on time.

This marks the eighth consecutive day where more than 5,000 cases were recorded.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), this brought the number of active cases to 52,132.

Of this, 93.1% are mild, 2.3% are asymptomatic, 1.9% are severe, and 1.5% are in critical condition.

The DOH also announced that 6,266 more patients recovered from the illness, bringing the total to 1,167,426, while 146 new fatalities brought the death toll to 21,158.

Eight duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count while 86 cases that were previously tagged as recovered were reclassified as fatalities.

Data also showed that 57% of the country’s intensive care unit beds are in use while 38% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region, 50% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 37% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.

The OCTA Research group earlier said that the COVID-19 reproduction number in the NCR has increased to 0.68 from 0.57 over the past week.—LDF, GMA News
