PPCRV seeks help from churches to encourage voter registration

The election watchdog of the Catholic Church, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), has formally asked dioceses around the country to help encourage people to register for the May 2022 elections.

In a post in the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website, PPCRV Executive Director Maria Isabel Buenaobra said they asked for help to raise awareness of the importance of voting.

“We are collaborating with dioceses for this campaign to encourage everyone, from the youth, those deactivated, and even OFWs, to get registered and reactivated,” she said in an interview on the Church-backed Radio Veritas.

“Let us get registered because the May 2022 polls is a high-stakes election. We need to use our rights to vote,” she added.

Meanwhile, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon in an interview with journalist Malou Mangahas there are millions of Filipinos who have not registered.

On The Mangahas Interviews, Guanzon said that out of the four million new voters or those who will be 18 years old on election day, around 3.5 million have registered.

Lifting data from the Comelec, the CBCP post reported that about 3.7 million applicants for voter registration filed since January 2020 and about 4 million new applicants or those that just turned 18 are expected to be registered. -- BAP, GMA News
