Robredo's challenge to opposition supporters: Seek unity

Robredo's challenge to opposition supporters: Seek unity

Supporters of the opposition should be inclusive to achieve unity as the national and local elections are being anticipated next year, Vice President Leni Robredo said Sunday.

With the recent announcement of anti-administration coalition 1Sambayan's nominees for the 2022 polls, Robredo asked to stop exclusion among opposition members.

"Sa lahat ng supporters natin, hindi natin gustong sabihin na 'yung iba ang paniniwala ng iba, masama na sila. Hindi dapat ganoon. Dapat intindihin kung bakit ganito paniniwala nila. Kung hindi natin iintindihin, hindi tayo magkakaroon ng pag-iisa," said Robredo in her weekly radio program.

(To all our supporters, just because a person's belief is different doesn't mean they are bad. It shouldn't be like that. We need to know the reason behind their belief. If we can't do this, we won't have unity.)

"'Yun ang aking challenge, 'yun ang recommendation sa grupo na magbigay ng espasyo. Hindi puwede sabihin na gusto ko unity pero gusto ko ikaw lang. Hindi 'yun ganoon," she also pointed out.

(That is my challenge, recommendation to the group to give space. We can't say we want unity but we just want this particular person. It shouldn't be like that.)

In addition, Robredo suggested that despite different opinions, no voices should be left unheard.

"Dapat kasi lagi tayong bukas at dapat mayroon tayong espasyo
na pakinggan 'yung iba. Kung sarado tayo, walang mangyayari," she said.

(We need to be open and give space to hear others' concerns. If we do not do this, nothing will happen.)

In the upcoming elections, Robredo also pointed out that running for elections should not be focused on beating the Duterte administration.

She also asked that opposition members should understand why the President is "popular" among Filipinos.

"Nandito tayo sa sitwasyon na 'to, hindi dahil sa isang tao, hindi dahil kay Pangulo pero dahil sa situation na umiiral. Parang siya nag-give rise sa ganito ng political situation. Kailangan natin intindihin bakit daming attracted kay Pangulo," said Robredo.

(We are in this situation not because of one person, not because of the President but because this is the situation. Duterte gave rise to the political situation. We need to understand why so many are attracted to the President.)

In her video message before the 1Sambayan announcement, Robredo said Filipinos are divided because of their frustrations over issues.

Aside from Robredo, also named by 1Sambayan as its nominees for the presidency and vice presidency were former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Senator Grace Poe, CIBAC party-list Representative Eduardo Villanueva, lawyer Jose Manuel "Chel" Diokno, and Batangas Representative Vilma Santos-Recto. —KG, GMA News
