Kiko Pangilinan to seek Senate reelection in Eleksyon 2022

Senator Francis Pangilinan on Tuesday announced that he will vie for another term in the Senate in the upcoming 2022 national and local elections.

“Well, that is the plan. I have one more term. I’m on my first term on my second round,” Pangilinan said when asked about his 2022 plans during a virtual interview with reporters.

“Nakita ko na marami pa ring challenges sa agriculture sector, marami pa ring challenges lalo na ngayon with the COVID, there is a need for food security all the more,” he added.

(I saw that there are still challenges in the agriculture sector especially now that we are in the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a need for food security all  the more.)

He said he will continue to champion the plight of farmers and fisherfolks as well as the rural development in the country.

Pangilinan was first elected in the Senate in 2001-2007. He ran for second term and ended his stint as senator in 2013.

In May 2014, Pangilinan was appointed by former President Bengino Aquino III as Presidential Assistant for Food Security and Agricultural Modernization.

He took charge of the National Food Authority (NFA), National Irrigation Administration, Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA), and Philippine Coconut Authority.

After he resigned from the Aquino administration’s Cabinet in 2015,  he was reelected in the Senate in 2016.

Under the 1987 Constitution, senators’ term of office runs for six years and they are only allowed to run for two consecutive terms. — RSJ, GMA News
