6,192 new COVID-19 infections push active cases to 55,482

The Philippines’ tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases rose to 1,424,518 on Friday with 6,192 new infections as four laboratories failed to submit reports on time.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the number of active cases in the country further increased to 55,482.

Of this, 91.5% are mild, 3.8% are asymptomatic, 2.0% are severe, and 1.4% are in critical condition.

The DOH also reported that total recoveries climbed to 1,344,063 after 2,212 more patients recovered from the illness, the lowest recorded since April 17.

Meanwhile, 177 fatalities brought the death toll to 24,973.

Eleven duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 12 cases previously tagged as recoveries have been validated to be active cases, and 102 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Data from the DOH showed that 55% of the intensive care unit beds nationwide are in use while 34% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), 40% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 30% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.

President Rodrigo Duterte has placed NCR, Rizal, and Bulacan under a general community quarantine "with some restrictions" until July 15, 2021.

Earlier, the  OCTA Research group flagged the cities of Davao, Iloilo, Baguio, and San Fernando in La Union as areas of concern over a rising number of COVID-19 cases and high hospital bed occupancy rates.—LDF, GMA News
