5,908 new Philippine COVID-19 cases logged; death toll tops 25K

The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday reported 5,908 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, bringing the nationwide tally to 1,430,419, as five laboratories failed to submit reports on time.

According to the DOH, the country’s active cases decreased to 53,665.

Of these, 91.2% were mild, 3.8% were asymptomatic, 2.0% were severe, and 1,4% were in critical condition.

Meanwhile, total recoveries also rose to 1,351,691 with 7,698 new ones while 90 fatalities brought the death toll to 25,063.

Seven duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 19 cases previously tagged as recoveries have been validated to be active cases, and 46 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Data from the DOH showed that 55% of intensive care unit beds nationwide were in use while 34% of the mechanical ventilators were occupied.

In the National Capital Region, 40% of ICU beds were utilized while 28% of mechanical ventilators were in use.

The Health Department earlier reminded the public to remain vigilant against COVID-19 after the Philippines was classified as a low-risk area for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the DOH said no local cases of the more infectious Delta variant that was first discovered in India have been recorded in the country. — DVM, GMA News
