Eleazar: PNP saved over P40M in body camera purchases

Top cop Police General Guillermo Eleazar said Sunday that the Philippine National Police has saved over P40 million in the purchase of body cameras for law-enforcement operations.

Eleazar made the remark in a public address in response to unverified reports that the PNP is included in Senator Manny Pacquiao's list of corrupt government agencies.

"We are coordinating with the office of Senator Pacquiao to verify if he indeed mentioned the PNP in his alleged list of corrupt government agencies through the procurement of body cameras," Eleazar said.

Eleazar, however, assured the public that no government money was misused in the purchase of body cameras, and the funds are fully accounted for.

In fact, he said, the PNP has saved over P40 million in the transaction, and that the savings will be used to procure high-definition cameras in the PNP's drive against insurgency and terrorism.

Moreover, Eleazar said that if indeed the senator mentioned the PNP as among corrupt government agencies that are now being investigated, he would ask the lawmaker to provide the police with the details of the alleged irregularity.

Eleazar vowed that the PNP will immediately look into the matter. —LBG, GMA News
