Duterte on Eleksyon 2022 VP run: I'm sold on the idea

President Rodrigo Duterte has reiterated his openness to run for vice president in the May 2022 polls.

"To the proposition that I run for vice president, medyo I'm sold [on] the idea," Duterte said during his meeting Tuesday with fellow PDP-Laban party mates, who were urging him to seek the second highest elected post in the country.

"Meaning to say, I'm seriously thinking of running for vice president," he added.

The taped PDP-Laban meeting was aired on Wednesday by state-run PTV 4.

Earlier during the meeting, party chair Duterte said he might run but won't make promises.

Maybe, I will [run for Vice President]. Pero huwag na tayo mag promise ng pabahay [Let us not promise free housing anymore]," he said.

"We should address the agony and sorrow of the Filipino. Kung nandiyan ako [If I am there], I will find a way to be productive," he added.

The President, however, clarified that he will only have a fruitful stint as Vice President if his elected successor is his friend.

“Eh kung tatakbo ako bise presidente na hindi ko kaibigan 'yong maging presidente [If I were to run for vice president and the president is not my friend], I would be reduced to inutility,” he said.

“Ako, kasi kung magtakbo ako at maawa ang Panginoong Diyos, manalo pa ako, kung may boboto pa sa akin… Kung lahat ng PDP ang boboto lang, tapos wala na, ah wala na tayo. Time to recruit a new breed. We cannot be too presumptuous about these things, you know,” he added.

(If I run and by the mercy of God, I win...if there are those who will still vote for me...But if only those from PDP-Laban will vote for me, we will not win.)

Likewise, the President maintained that his party stands for the country.
