DOH: Davao, Western Visayas, Cordillera regions at high risk for COVID-19

By JULIA MARI ORNEDO, GMA News

The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday flagged the regions of Davao, Western Visayas, and the Cordillera as high-risk areas for COVID-19 due to their high average daily attack rate (ADAR) and intensive care unit (ICU) occupancy rate.

DOH Epidemiology Bureau director Dr. Alethea De Guzman said the ADAR in the three regions were higher than seven cases per 100,000 people while ICU utilization stood at 81.41% in Region 11, 87.34% in Region 6, and 68.54% in Cordillera as of July 10.

The entire Philippines, however, remains a low-risk area

with an ADAR of 4.88 cases per 100,000 population and a two-week case growth rate of -10%. Average daily new infections fell to 5,221 during July 6 to 12 from 5,458 during June 29 to July 5.

De Guzman said COVID-19 cases in NCR Plus (Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal) have plateaued while infections are “slightly increasing” in the rest of Luzon and “slowly declining” in Visayas and Mindanao following a spike in cases.

Metro Manila case

Meanwhile, De Guzman said the downward COVID-19 case trend in seven Metro Manila cities “reversed” after they posted positive two-week case growth rates.

Makati and San Juan were classified as high risk due to their ADAR of 9.76 and 8.95 cases per 100,000 population, respectively, and high hospital bed occupancy rates.

Other cities whose two-week case growth rate turned positive were Muntinlupa, Mandaluyong, Manila, Malabon, and Navotas.

Central Visayas

De Guzman also said the COVID-19 case trend is “plateauing” in Region 7, where health authorities have reported a third wave of infections.

She said Bohol, Cebu City, and Lapu-Lapu City are showing an upward trend while cases in Negros Oriental are on a downtrend.

The Philippines has tallied over 1.48 million COVID-19 cases with 1.40 million recoveries and 26,015 deaths as of Monday afternoon. -MDM, GMA News
