Retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio on Thursday weighed in on the infighting in the ruling PDP-Laban and its impact on the political landscape ahead of the 2022 elections.

Carpio, one of the convenors of opposition coalition 1Sambayan, said rivalry among political personalities is “normal in an election at this stage.”

“At this stage, there is a lot of maneuvering and they may be able to unify or not. We don’t know,” he said in an online press conference.

He said the opposition could only benefit “if the administration candidates are fighting each other and there will be many of them running [for president].”

over the PDP-Laban after the latter organized assemblies without the permission of Pacquiao, the party's acting president, and former party president now executive vice chairman Senator Aquilino Pimentel III.

Malacañang, however, said Cusi had the blessing of the party chairman—President Rodrigo Duterte — to organize these gatherings.

Pacquiao’s faction ousted Cusi and two other officials from the party last week, but the Palace said Duterte recognized Cusi’s leadership.

Cusi earlier claimed that the rift between them started when they were not informed about the PDP-Laban’s change of leadership when Pacquiao became party president.

Duterte has also lashed out at Pacquiao after the senator claimed that corruption has worsened under the current administration and found the government’s stance on the West Philippine Sea issue lacking.
