The Philippines' peace and order situation has improved during the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año said Friday.

At the Pre-SONA forum, Año cited the lower crime volume in the first semester of 2021 compared to the record in the second semester of 2016, when Duterte assumed the presidency.

“From the second semester of 2016, with about 292,580 crime volume, bumababa na tayo 193, 103 up to the first semester of 2021,” he said.

“Ibig sabihin, nag-improve ang ating peace and order situation" (It means, our peace and order situation has improved), he added.

Año also cited the 2020 Global Law and Order survey by American analytics firm Gallup

, which showed that the Philippines is considered as among the safest countries in the world.

The survey was based on citizens feeling safe and having confidence in the country's police.

In the report based on a survey conducted in 2019, the Philippines is tied with Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and Serbia with a law and order index score of 84.

Out of the 144 countries, the Philippines is among the top 40 nations with the highest scores.

However, international monthly magazine Global Finance ranked the Philippines at bottom of a list of the safest countries in the world.

The rankings take into account three factors: war and peace; personal security; and natural disaster risk, "including the unique risk factors stemming from COVID-19," Año said. —LBG, GMA News
