Duterte tells LGUs: Making people wait in line is bullsh*t, use your common sense

President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday urged local government units (LGUs) not to make people wait in line, under the rain, and in flooded areas just to get their COVID-19 vaccines.

Duterte made the appeal at a briefing in Malacanang after seeing the long queues of people in media reports. He said the LGUs should "come up with a more sane process of vaccination than allowing people to queue as early as 4 a.m. and getting their shots at 9 a.m."

"Cold people are exposed in the open, unprotected from the elements then they are waiting to get a chance to have the shot, mga 3 to 4 hours magtindig diyan. Sa bagay, baha ngayon diyan (they stand in line for 3 to 4 hours, and the areas are flooded)," he added.

Duterte told Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano to issue a directive to "enjoin" LGUs to be more "proactive" and "circumspect especially now that the Southwest Monsoon is passing the country na. It's not the way to do it."

The President said mayors and barangay captains should look for dry and bigger venues to conduct vaccination, and properly organize the schedule for inoculation.

"Make a head count of how many they can... time and motion in vaccination... how many they can inoculate. Then tell them to come back rather than make them wait there. It's a question of common sense," he said.

"Para bang to me, it's bullsh*t kapag ganun ang ginagawa mo sa Filipino if you can't do it in a place where there's roof and cover their heads na hindi sila mabasa. Not exposed to elements. Umagang-umaga, [nakita ko], naku Dios ko po, bakit naman ganun," he added.

(To me, it's bullsh*t when you do that to Filipinos, if you can't do it in a place where there's roof and cover their head so they won't get wet and exposed to the elements. It was so early in the morning and I saw the long lines. Oh my God, why did you let this happen.)

Duterte warned LGUs that "that ought not to be repeated, kawawa iyong tao (I pity those people)," saying the people are being exposed to other diseases like leptospirosis, flu, and other respiratory diseases.

The President's remarks came following reports that despite the foul weather, people still lined up in various vaccination sites in Metro Manila, including Manila and Mandaluyong, to get inoculated against COVID-19 this week. -MDM, GMA News
