Duterte on Sotto: He can become a good vice president

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday vouched for Senate President Vicente Sotto III, who will seek the vice presidency in Eleksyon 2022, calling the senator a “capable” and “good” Filipino.

In his final State of the Nation Address, Duterte said Sotto “is a good man. He can become a good vice president.”

“With due respect to Senator Sotto, who is also running for the vice presidency, he is a capable man. A good man and a Filipino,” Duterte said.

In a message to reporters, Sotto said he "is humbled by the words of the President. I thank him profusely for mentioning me."

Senator Panfilo Lacson earlier confirmed that he would run for president with Sotto as his running mate in Eleksyon 2022.

The Senate President said he is not bothered if Duterte will also run for vice president saying it will be up to the Filipino people to decide who they think is best for the position.

Sotto also said he would leave it up to his party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition, to decide on its official nominee for vice president in next year’s elections.

Duterte, in July, said he is "sold on the idea" of running for vice president as his party mates at PDP-Laban have been urging him to seek the second highest elected post.  He also said he will run for vice president if his critics will continue to threaten him with criminal charges.

In June, the President said he would support House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez if the Leyte representative would run for vice president in Eleksyon 2022.—AOL, GMA News
