Armed Forces promotes Hidilyn Diaz to staff sergeant rank after Olympic victory

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Cirilito Sobejana on Wednesday said weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz has been promoted to staff sergeant rank after winning the country’s first gold medal in 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In a statement, Sobejana said the promotion has been approved by the Philippine Air Force effective July 27.

“The Philippine Air Force through its Commanding General approved the promotion of Sgt Hidilyn Diaz effective 27 July 2021 to the rank of Staff Sergeant,” he said.

“We laud and support this move at the General Headquarters to mark SSg Diaz’ remarkable achievements in the field of sports and for bringing pride and glory to our country," Sobejana added.

Sobejana congratulated Diaz for her win, saying that the AFP is proud of her accomplishments.

On Monday, Diaz delivered the country's first-ever gold medal in the Olympics after winning the women's 55-kg weightlifting event of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Monday at the Tokyo International Forum.

Her win ended a near century-long Olympic gold medal drought since the Philippines first competed in the games in 1924. The country has since won three silvers and seven bronze medals.

Diaz had previously won a silver medal in the women's 53-kg category in the 2016 Rio Olympics. --KBK, GMA News
