Reelectionists included in 1Sambayan’s choices for Eleksyon 2022 Senate slate —Carpio

At least 24 names are being considered by the opposition coalition 1Sambayan for its senatorial slate in Eleksyon 2022, according to one of its convenors on Wednesday.

“We have about 24 names that were nominated for our senatorial slate. Many of them are reelectionists, but I don’t have the list right now,” retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio said in an online press conference. 

“We will probably reduce that to about 14 because as we said we will consult our presidential candidate before we finalize. There will be a leeway for the presidential candidate to trim down also.” 

Only 12 Senate seats are up for grabs in the May 9, 2022 elections.

Carpio also said anyone from the coalition could nominate a candidate for President or Vice President as long as he or she has the support of at least two convenors. 

The prospective candidates will then be scrutinized based on interviews, track record, and platform of government. 

“If somebody will nominate somebody who has been identified with the administration before, we cannot just outright reject because we have a process. We will ask the convenors, if two will endorse, then it will go to the next stage and then we come to a voting,” he said. “It will be [decided] by [a] majority vote.”
