The Philippines on Wednesday reported 4,478 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the total to 1,566,667, as four laboratories failed to submit data on time.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the low case count is due to the extraction that was done at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, instead of the usual 1 p.m.

“Because of that, there were some cases reported yesterday that should have been included in the case counts today,” the DOH said.

The new cases brought the country’s active cases to 54,552.

Of this, 93.4% are mild, 1.2% are asymptomatic, 2.3% are severe, and 1.4% are in critical condition.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 1,484,714 after 6,149 more patients recovered from the illness.

Meanwhile, 84 new fatalities brought the death toll to 27,401.

Eleven duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 53 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Data from the DOH showed that 57% of the intensive care unit beds nationwide are in use while 38% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), 46% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 36% of the mechanical ventilators are in use. —NB, GMA News
