OCTA: New COVID-19 cases in NCR up by 46% from previous week

Metro Manila registered an average of 1,394 new COVID-19 cases daily from July 26 to August 1, “a 46% increase from the previous week” during which 953 new infections were recorded each day, the OCTA Research group said Monday.

In their latest monitoring report, the independent team of experts said the reproduction number of the virus in Metro Manila rose to a “very high” 1.59. The figure refers to the number of people that each COVID-19 case can infect.

The capital region also posted an average daily attack rate (ADAR) of 9.98 cases per 100,000 population, 46% hospital bed utilization rate, 51% intensive care unit (ICU) occupancy rate, and 10% positivity rate.

Meanwhile, OCTA said Cagayan de Oro remained a critical-risk area with a reproduction number of 1.46, ADAR of 21.20 cases per 100,000 population, 85% hospital bed and 86% ICU occupancy rates, and a 30% positivity rate.

The group also flagged the following as high-risk areas:

  • Cebu City
  • Lapu-Lapu
  • General Santos
  • Iloilo City
  • Mandaue
  • Laoag
  • Bacoor
  • Dasmariñas

“In Central Visayas, Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue continue to have a rise in new COVID-19 cases, although the trends in these three LGUs have slowed a little, as indicated by a decrease in reproduction number,” OCTA said.

It added that the healthcare utilization rate in Cebu City and Mandaue have stayed below 70%.

The group also noted that the cities of Iloilo and Davao are both seeing a downward trend in new cases.

Davao City has been reclassified as a moderate-risk area after weeks of being flagged as high risk.

The Philippines has logged over 1.6 million COVID-19 cases with 1.5 million recoveries and 28,093 deaths as of Monday afternoon. —LDF, GMA News
