UNA defers Eleksyon 2022 talks amid rising Delta variant cases

The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) will temporarily halt all Eleksyon 2022-related talks amid the rising Delta coronavirus variant cases in the country, UNA president and Senator Nancy Binay announced Tuesday.

“Amid the atmosphere of 'Elections 2022', UNA finds it cold and insensitive to put on the table any electoral agenda while our people are experiencing uncertainties in the wake of the growing Delta variant cases in country,” Binay said in a statement.

UNA will put on hold all political discussions, including alliances, coalitions, and its other political activities.

“Politics is aggravating a public health issue. It is also hampering our level of response. This is why UNA would rather put a high premium in ensuring the health and safety of the people than concern itself with 2022,” she said.

“For this reason, UNA has decided to suspend all talks in connection with the 2022 National Elections until further notice so that the Party can help and focus well in fighting the pandemic,” the senator added.

In July, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said UNA chairman and former Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay Sr. will join the 2022 senatorial race.

The UNA stalwart will join Senator Panfilo Lacson and Sotto’s ticket. Lacson and Sotto will gun for presidency and vice presidency, respectively, in the upcoming polls. —KG, GMA News
