11,021 new COVID-19 infections bring Philippines’ active cases to over 76K


The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the country rose to 1,649,341 on Saturday with 11,021 new infections, the highest daily infections recorded since mid-April, as three laboratories failed to submit data on time.

This marks the second consecutive day where more than 10,000 cases were recorded. The last time a higher tally of new cases got reported was on April 11 with 11,101 cases.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), this brought the country’s active cases to 76,063, also the highest since April 25.

Of this, 93% are mild, 3% are asymptomatic, 1.8% are severe, and 1% are in critical condition.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire earlier said active COVID-19 cases in NCR are projected to multiply by the thousands even with weeks of stricter community quarantines.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to  1,544,443 after 9,194 more patients recovered from the illness.

Meanwhile, 162 new fatalities brought the death toll to 28,835.

Fifteen duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 8 cases previously tagged as recoveries have been validated to be active cases, and 94 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Data from the DOH showed that 62% of the intensive care unit beds nationwide are in use while 43% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region, 59% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 46% of the mechanical ventilators are in use. -MDM, GMA News
