Philippines records 8,900 new COVID-19 cases; active tally rises to 78k


The coronavirus disease infected 8,900 more Filipinos nationwide, pushing the total tally of active cases to 78,480.

This number of active cases is the highest since August 8, which recorded 77,516. 

In its latest COVID-19 data on Monday, the Department of Health also showed that the number of fresh cases increased the country's total COVID-19 case tally to 1,667,714.

Of the active cases, 94% are mild, 2.1% are asymptomatic, 1.7% are severe, and 1% are in critical condition.

Total COVID-19 death count reached 29,128, including six new fatalities.

The Philippine health department also revealed that 7,937 more patients recovered from the disease, increasing the country's total number of recoveries to 1,560,106.

According to DOH, Metro Manila's healthcare system showed that 67% of ICU beds are being used while 50% mechanical ventilators are in use.

For the whole Philippines, 65% ICU beds are utilized while 47% mechanical ventilators are in use.

The DOH also modified the COVID-19 tally as it reported that 102 duplicate cases were  deleted from the total case count.

Meanwhile, four cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

The National Capital Region was once again placed on the strictest form of lockdown for two weeks to control the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, which has reached 450.

Amid the restricted movement, authorities pushed for continued vaccination across the country. Philippines reported 11.3 million Filipinos who are fully inoculated versus the severe respiratory ailment.—LDF, GMA News
